A Designated Substance Survey (DSS) is a safety check that helps identify and document hazardous materials inside a building, especially before starting construction, renovation, or demolition work.
The goal of the survey is simple: to protect workers and occupants from harmful substances like asbestos, lead, and silica by making sure they’re properly handled, managed, or removed.
In Ontario, completing a DSS isn’t optional: It’s a legal requirement under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
Ontario regulates 11 designated substances, but four are most often found in older buildings:
